Travel Tips to visit the Salar de Uyuni, The Largest Salt Desert in the World

The Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia is one of the most unique and awesome landscapes in all of South America, if not on Earth. It is a 10,582 square kilometers salt desert on the Altiplano, the largest salt desert in the world, a product of evaporated prehistoric lakes, the salt crust extends to the horizon creating during the rainy season a thin layer of water that transforms this plain into a beautiful reflection of the sky. And it is also home to the world’s first salt hotel. Visiting the raw and desolate beauty of the Salar de Uyuni can be an incredible experience or a logistical nightmare. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for your travel to South America.

How To Get There

The Uyuni salt desert is located between Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina so the logistics and duration of your trip will depend on where you come from. Tours to Uyuni depart mainly from these locations:

San Pedro de Atacama, Chile: Agencies take travelers to the border before handing over the rest of the trip to a Bolivian tour operator. Due to the distance, it is a three-day trip. Keep in mind the covid-19 regulations each country has for crossing.

Tupiza, Bolivia: This is the best starting point for travelers coming from Argentina. Tour operators recommend four-day trips from Tupiza, to visit the Uyuni salt flat on the last day.

La Paz, Bolivia: take a bus or flight to Uyuni, a dusty little town that receives visitors every day. Uyuni is so close to the salt desert that tourists can easily book one-day excursions from here. This is the best option for travelers that are visiting South America from north to south. This is the most popular starting point for tours to the salt desert. Something can be seen like Plaza Arce and the main square. Flights from La Paz to Uyuni can be booked in advance (they take one hour). There are also buses from La Paz (they last between 10 and 12 hours). Mostly for travelers that come from Peru and after visiting Cusco or Puno that want to cross Bolivia on the way to Argentina o Chile.

When To Go

The Salar de Uyuni has two distinctive seasons. The rainy season (December to April) is the time when visitors come to witness the breathtaking mirror effect of the salt. Be cautious and aware of excessive rain in December and January as tours may be canceled or postponed. During the dry season (May to November) temperatures are cooler, the ground is hardened, and travelers can drive through the stark white landscape past places that are inaccessible during the rainy season.

Choose a Tour

Although the salt desert is one of the most popular attractions in Bolivia, it is only part of the beautiful Altiplano region. Many tourists come to Uyuni as a stop after visiting Machu Picchu and the Puno islands in Lake Titicaca.

You can choose between a shared tour or a private tailor-made tour. Luxury tours can be personalized to suit the client’s tastes, giving the traveler more control over their itinerary and the ability to go out of the way to see volcanoes and caves. They also include an English-speaking guide, a chef, and a more comfortable vehicle that allows you to stop whenever you want and take as many pictures as you can. Peru Luxury Travel is ready to take you to enjoy this experience in the most comfortable and friendly environment.
