Weather is an important issue on deciding your next Luxury Travel to Machupicchu. If you are planning a trip to Peru or book a tour in Cusco you must know a few things before coming, this marvelous city is located about 3200 meters above sea level and is completely surrounded by mountains, the weather here is fluctuating and sometimes very tricky, temperatures range goes from 2ºC to 22ºC, which relies heavily on the month or season you will be coming.
This question is the one we hear the most from our travelers, and there is only one answer, only you can choose when the best time to travel to Machu Picchu is. Tours at Cusco has different characteristics, Cusco’s weather is marked by 2 seasons: rainy and dry one. We will explain them in detail so you can compare the pros and cons and decide what would you like the most.
The intense rains usually happen at evening and noon, but if you do not mind getting a little bit wet, Cusco city and especially your Machu Picchu tour will dress up with its best landscape. The city gets filled with rainbows, sometimes 2 or 3 at once. No so far, the Sacred Valley of the Incas and Machu Picchu wears its most intense green and colors bloom with flowers, which makes it a marvelous landscape that holds an impressive and magnificent architecture, if you take this season as an option we highly recommend you to take the train services to Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu town, that way you will appreciate a panoramic view of this wonderful mountain range. On your way up to the sanctuary you will observe a variety of flora and fauna like: Orchids and many bugs species like dragonflies, butterflies, caterpillars, fireflies and variety of birds. However, mosquitoes could be bad companions on your tour to Machupicchu.
Although it’s rainy season, it’s also summer in Cusco, so temperatures are not the coldest of the year, we can enjoy a wonderful sun most time of the morning, and expect some sparkly rain during the afternoon. Days are relatively tempered and precipitation ranges goes from 500mm to 1000mm per year.
One of the greatest advantages of taking a tour in Cusco at this time of the year is that you will find it less crowded, so it is possible to find better availability of services like: hotels, train schedules, transportation, and more. In addition, it will be the perfect opportunity to take “the best photography” with an incredible landscape and no people getting in your shoot. On this time is not advisable to take the traditional trekking routes to Machu Picchu, they become a bit more challenging and trickier to walk through, some of them get close for maintenance of the roads.
Finally, if you seem like the person that will enjoy rainy-cold-sunny days, please don’t forget to pack waterproof clothes, trekking shoes to walk safely on wet and slippery surfaces, and maybe an umbrella. Also, do not leave your sun protection (cap or hat, sunscreen, sunglasses) and of course always a good warmly coat. Anyway, don’t worry! If you forget some of these items, WE are here for you! In PERU LUXURY TRAVEL you will be helped 24/7 and willing to advice you with the best recommendations to enjoy this amazing vacation destiny, we will make your Cusco trip the best experience ever in your life!
Weather at this time of the year is dry and quite colder, however is less cloudy and you will be able to enjoy sunny days most of the time and lower temperatures at night, although sometimes small rains can fall for short periods. June, July and August are the driest months but also the more crowded. Temperatures goes between 12o and 18oC at morning and 5 to 1 at nights. If you choose to travel to Cusco during this time, know that there are many people who will do the same as you. This causes that services such as: train tickets to Machu Picchu, hotels and guided tours at Cusco city, must be booked more in advance and also increase their cost. If you are used to cold weathers, this may be the best time to visit Cusco City, just get ready to line up or take photos with many new friends.
However, this is the best time to take the traditional Inca Trail or some of the many options you have for a trekking to Machu Picchu. Also, in June you can appreciate the Cusco’s traditional festivities and on the 24th of June the amazing Inti Raymi or “Sun’s Festivities”.
