History of a Hidden Sanctuary, The Luxury of Machu Picchu Citadel

Where is it located?

Machu Picchu’s Citadel is located in the Cusco region at Aguas Calientes district. It has an altitude of 7,972 feet or 2,430 meters above sea level, it is built in one of the most challenging and beautiful environments that exist on the planet, between the Andes Mountains Range and the Peruvian high jungle. It is undoubtedly the great attraction that all visitors want to know if they travel to Peru, but this Inca’s Citadel not only attracts attention for its archaeological remains, but also for the nature that surrounds it. Machu Picchu is built between two mountains, which are part of the attractions in it, and that can be visited and climbed.

History and Construction

It was built during the first half of the 15th century, when Inca Pachacutec ruled the empire, this Inca was the main responsible for this culture expansion. However, the work continued with his successor and son Tupac Yupanqui. During the Inca era, Machu Picchu was an important urban and religious center. This is demonstrated by its fine polished stone constructions where its beautiful temples stand up:  The Temple of the Sun, the Temple of the Moon, the Temple of the 3 Windows and more. It is believed that Machu Picchu had between 300 and 1,000 inhabitants during its most splendid season. Most of Machu Picchu population was dedicated to agriculture. In addition, a small part of the nobility was dedicated to religious rites.

To feed the entire population of Machu Picchu, the Incas built platforms within the Inca City (agricultural sector) as well as in the surrounding sectors (at the current archaeological sites of Patallacta and Qentemarca). The road network ‘Qhapac Ñan’ or “Royal path”, also known as Inca Trail built to communicate Machu Picchu with the surrounding villages favored trade with the rest of the empire.

Its majestic architecture comprises about 140 structures. The average altitude of this important site is 2 450 meters above sea. His scientific discovery is attributed to researcher Hiram Bingham, who was in search of the last capital of the Vilcabamba Incas. Machu Picchu was declared «Historical Sanctuary of Peru» in 1981.
